"You outdid yourself, Fen," I muse softly, wriggling down into the comfortable sofa. There are a half-dozen overstuffed pieces of furniture clustered beneath the portable canopy that shields us from the weather. There are mounds of blankets and sheepskins for warmth and propane heating units hiss softly in the background. All this facilitates the front wall standing open to reveal an exquisite winter wonderland.
Snow falls silently on the heavily bundled crowd awaiting the orchestra that is tuning up onstage. We are set back on the low rise of hill so that our view is unobstructed.
More asleep than awake, Sara is bundled up beside me with her dark head in my lap. Catherine is nearby, talking sweetly with Lindsey, Jamie and Jo. My family and friends are close and well. Life is good.
Soft strains of perfectly chosen Christmas music waft through the snowflakes, caressing over the ears and souls of all in attendance. Immediate quiet falls over the crowd and we immerse ourselves in the peaceful serenade. Sara sighs happily and settles more deeply into her relaxation, making me smile and continue petting her hair. Catherine wedges herself into the small space between the sofa arm and my body, her warmth precious against me.
It's Christmas Eve and the music and the falling snow feel just perfect. Nuzzling Catherine's neck makes her giggle softly and wrap herself even more tightly around me. A glance back shows me that Lindsey has fallen asleep against Jamie, who is nearly asleep against her mother, who is nestled only half asleep against Michael. My old pal shares a knowing smile with me and my eyes jump over to the new Sentinel pair, nestled together on the same couch with Olivia and Alex. The elders of the Suits and their entourage occupy a raised platform behind us where it is even warmer and they too return my smile.
A year ago, I lived my life unsuspecting of the changes that the last year has wrought. I was alone and lonely, isolated from the important things, only my work to ground me. Now, I have my own pack and have been returned to the lives of my estranged friends.
Any gift will be extraneous in the face of that.
